Great Serdang Debate Results

Dear all,

This is to inform you that the Great Serdang Debate 2008 hosted by UPM from the 22nd-26th May has just been concluded and the tournament was a huge success. The organizing committee in particular who were so kind in providing all the facilities for the sports we had, the great food, speedy tabs as well as great hospitality!

The tourney saw 20 teams from 7 institutions and was running on the Australs style. here are the full results and motions

4. UT MARA 1 - 3 wins

5. UT MARA 5 - 3 wins

6. UT MARA 4 * - 3 wins

Semifinalists : IIUM1, The team consisted of Habib, Syahira and Asraf. & UT MARA 1(maketab, atiq, wani)

Runners-up : IIUM 2 (Yem, Hadi, Chua)} IIU were Negative

Champs : UT MARA 2 (Izzie, Aerie, Aina) } 3-2 Split decision, UiTM was affirmative

Overall best speaker : Nor Hazwani Zainal (UT MARA 1)

Finals Best Speaker: Iskandar Abdullah (Izzie) (UT MARA 2)

The champions won RM 3k in cash, challenge trophy and individual trophies, runners-up won RM1.5 K in cash and individual trophies and the finals best speaker won RM500 + an individual trophy!

Congratulations UiTM for a well deserved win!

Also congrats Izzie and Wani for the best speaker awards.

Round 1 - Prisons and Prisoners

1. Taht Prisoners should be allowed to vote
2. That we should privatize prisons
3. That we should revoke the possibility of parole for sex offenders

Round 2 - The gender

1. That we should legalize abortion
2. That aid should be conditional to the development of women's right
3. can anyone remeber what the third one here was?

Round 3 - Economics

1. That trading blocs are better than global free trade
2. That WTO should enforce fair trade instead of free trade
3. That we should prioritize food security over bio-fuel

Round 4 - The underaged

1. That voting should start at age 16
2. That pregnant students should be allowed to take maternity leaves
3. That parental consent is not needed for teenagers seeking abortion

Round 5 - feeling suicidal

1. That suicide should be decriminalized
2. That websites facilitating suicide should be banned
3. That parents of children that commited suicide should be subjected to a negligence inquiry

Quarterfinals - Democracy

1. That state owned media should not exist
2. That democracies should allow citizen-initiated referendums
3. That opinion polls distort the democratic process

Semifinal - Education

1. That parents should be allowed to teach their children at home
2. That education vouchers are necessary to create better schools
3. That state should provide free and compulsory nursery education for all children

Final - Medical Ethics

1. That doctors should be compelled to report instances of domestic violence.
