Source ::: THE PENINSULADOHA: Fostering debating skills in the neigbhouring GCC countries, the QatarDebate has launched its Academy II in Oman. QatarDebate Academy II aims to extend the outreach programme and to recognise, appreciate and develop an equally enthusiastic and dedicated team of debaters – the National Debate Team of Oman.
The forum is a way for Team Oman to receive extra training along with Team Qatar before World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) in February, 2010. As part of the QatarDebate Academy II, the Arabic Debate program will also be launched. 17 new student debaters and three students from Team Qatar, three chaperons and three delegates comprise the Qatar Team, were sent to Oman for the QatarDebate Academy II.
Dr Abdul Gabbar Al Sharafi, Professor, Sultan Qaboos University, the key trainer to develop Arabic Debating skills, will meet and evaluate all the students from Qatar and Oman to choose the top three or more students who will then form the Arabic Debate Team. QatarDebate has sent a group of five international coaches to provide personal and exclusive training for the teams.
As part of the QatarDebate Academy II programme, QatarDebate is organising an Arabic and English Debate Night between the Qatar National Team and Oman National Team on December, 30. The motion for the Arabic Debate will be - This house believes that globalisation kills local cultures and for the English Debate - This house believes that we should support military intervention in Somalia.
QatarDebate Academy is 1 week intensive debate training programme, providing both debate theory and practice debate sessions in classrooms. The forum is bringing together teams from Qatar and Oman, to not only undergo training sessions but also practice debates with each other in mixed groups. This is Qatar Debate’s first chance to try and replicate its local programme abroad. Once successful, the forum can become a part of QatarDebate’s outreach programme as a way to support debate’s growth in other countries.
