THE UNION FOR CRITICAL THINKING SCHOLARSHIP
2012

Applications are invited for ONE scholarship for an international student who will register in 2012 at Stellenbosch University for an Master’s or Doctoral degree and who will join the Union for Critical Thinking within the Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert Institute for Student Leadership Development.
AWARD AND APPLICATION DETAIL
1.     Eligibility: Only students who register as full-time students and who are proceeding into the FIRST year of a Master’s or PhD degree are eligible.
2.     Value of the Award for 2012: R120,000 plus one economy return airticket.
3.     Tenures: Master’s – 2 Years. Doctoral – 3 Years. Second and third years renewable on proof of satisfactory progress and subject to performance evaluation with regard to Union activities as agreed with the Union for Critical Thinking.
4.     Criteria:
a.     Academic merit. The scholarship will be granted on the basis of academic merit. Applicants must have achieved at least 65% or equivalent for their final undergraduate majors or preceding postgraduate qualification.
b.     Proven experience in the field of debating on an international level and/or previous involvement on executive level with home institution’s Union or equivalent structure.
c.     Willingness to take up a leadership role within the Union at Stellenbosch University.
5.     Application procedure:
a.     A letter of application stating future career and academic objectives, addressed to the Senior Director: Postgraduate & International Office
b.     Completed Application Form attached to this notice.
c.     A one A-4 page CV.
d.     Copy of biographical page in passport.
e.     TWO letters of reference: ONE from an academic who have taught/supervised the applicant in the past three years and ONE commenting on the applicant’s proven track record in the field of debating and/or related activities.
f.      A letter of motivation about critical thinking with reference to the South African context.

h.     Applicants should also start with their application for admission to the degree programme of their choice. Please be reminded that the academic year starts at the end of January.
