The IDEA Global Debate Census 2011 is now entering the final few days of
the data gathering stage. As of 5pm on Friday 9 September, six hundred and six
university debate societies had completed the census form. When the process
started, I set myself the target of 700 and I’d still like to meet it.
If you’re an office bearer of a society or a coach or captain of a team
I’d really appreciate it if you would complete the census form (which takes
under a minute to do) at http://www.idebate.org/debate-census.
The main purpose of the census is to try and make a sensible estimate
about how many people in the world are involved with debate. At the moment
we’re focussing on the university level. We’re also going to use it to help
people get or stay in touch with each other.
One of the
most interesting things about conducting this census has been how fantastically
helpful people throughout the debate community have been. In terms of
translation, promoting the census through their own networks, providing
information and advice and so on. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank
both them and the community more generally for their help on this project.
Many thanks,
Nick Bibby
