Indrani Krishna, the recipient of the 2011 Europa Shield Inter-University Debate Tournament Best Debater award, says the award came as a complete surprise.
"Honestly, I was expecting the Europa Shield but not the outstanding debater because I believe it was more about advocating at this platform rather than competing," she said.
The 18-year old journalism student at the Fiji National University believes her fellow team members' sincerity during their arguments in earlier rounds, in particular during the final debate over the decriminalisation of sex work, gave them the upper hand.
"We really believe that sex work should be decriminalised because there are a lot of points that actually support it and other issues like child labour should not be acceptable in farming families, and things like domestic violence shouldn't be kept within the world," she said.
The avid orator said her past experience as a debater in primary and high schools coupled with the four weeks of intensive training sessions and inter college debates organised by the FNU prepared her well for the tournament.
