Pan Pacific Debate Championships Results & Motions

The past weekend the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific University jointly held the 2013 Pan Pacific BP Debate Championships. It was a great success, with Rob Boller and Tom Dowd doing an amazing job as hosts and tournament organizers. I speak for everyone present saying it was a wonderful weekend of sunshine, beach and debate!

The Champions of this years Pan Pacific were Loyola Marymount University (Courtney Pickard and Derbhail O’Crowley). In the final they defeated teams from the University of La Verne, Stanford University and Loyola Marymount University.

Motions for the weekend were as follows:

Round 1: This House believes that it is unethical to birth a child before adopting
Round 2: This House believes that the US government should immediately cease all signature strikes
Round 3: The House would force companies in the tourism industry who operate in regions with extreme wealth gaps to pay an annual portion of their profit to indigenous populations
Round 4: This House believes that the next papal conclave should choose to exclude cardinals implicated in child abuse scandals
Round 5: This House believes that universities should prioritize funding for competitive academic teams over athletic ones
Round 6: This House would create a jointly administered region for the Koreas, by the Koreas, in the Koreas

Semi: This House would force universities to provide all of their lectures, on free online databases, to the public
Final: This House believes that service in a well regulated militia should be a prerequisite to private gun ownership

Thank you to all the debaters and judges that participated!!

Josh Martin (Co-Chief Adjudicator)
