Lecturers, course tutors: to be announced soon.

Course director: Dr. István Tarrosy, PhD., Assistant Professor, Department of Political Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Pécs

The ICWiP International Culture Week in Pécs is one of the most important and popular complex summer school events of Central Europe and the Alps-Adriatic region. ICWiP and its International Studies Summer School provide an opportunity for students from all corners of the world to get engaged with a series of debates on topics closely connected with our transnational and ‘glocal’ world. After 17 years we decided to rethink the official program structure, and transform our project into a debate summer academy with the central topic: “Culture and Diplomacy in Our Global World”.

The major topic, i.e. the role of cultural and public diplomacy in international relations will be discussed from different angles, using interactive methods such as British Parliamentary Debating (BPD) with the help of invited debate experts and trainers. The official language of the summer academy is English. The first occasion will be devoted to introducing the topic of the entire summer school, then, to teambuilding activities, using elements of intercultural learning. Students will learn the method of parliamentary debate, which they will use during the sessions to negotiate over the issues connected with the central theme. In addition to the traditionally more serious summer school elements, we plan to design off-programs for the participants to be able to relax in a way that it is also inspiring and at the same time sufficiently educative in an indirect way. The cultural programmes will take place mostly in the evenings, such as a thematic movie evening, a guided night tour in the historic centre of Pécs, a museum night, a full-day in the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, trip to the surrounding wine-region, a truly multi- and intercultural village called Versend, and the annually organized ‘country show’.

The main target group is students of higher education and young volunteers of non-governmental organisations, but it is open for every enquirers! ICWiP hosts 20-25 different nationalities year by year. The participants will learn first of all from the invited trainers who will make them acquainted with debating skills, as well as from each other – representing numerous cultures of the world – and find common ground for an exciting exchange of thoughts. Cultural innovation through interactive communication is placed in the centre of discussions and actions.

Participating students have the chance to earn 7 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits issued by the co-host of the programme, the Humanities School, University of Pécs.

Its success is guaranteed with its 17-year-long history and its strength and dedication to rejuvenate itself!
