THE Second International Universities Arabic Debating Championship, held under the patronage of the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, came to a close on Wednesday as audiences’ favourite Sudan’s Khartoum University (KU) team, who had dominated the final debate, were declared winner of the championship.
The President of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali al Thani presented the award to the winning team.
The second and third positions at the tournament were bagged by Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) from the Sultanate of Oman and the University of Jordan respectively.
Speaking at the championship’s closing ceremony, Dr Hayat Abdullah Maarafi, Executive Director of QatarDebate, said, “We have been edified and entertained by the debaters of this contest, who have all performed admirably, proving indeed that they are the agents of change, given an opportunity to prepare for it.” Dr Maarafi expressed her gratitude to the contestants for supporting the Championship, and giving their best to it.
As the winners of the championship were announced, the crowd went wild, applauding the decision, as Sudanese members of the audience began to sing the country’s National Anthem.
Awards were also given out to the top 10 individual debaters participating in the championship.
The topic of the final debate was whether Arab Spring had succeeded or failed in achieving its objectives. Sudan’s Khartoum University team argued in favour of the argument that Arab Spring had succeeded whereas Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University argued against it.
Although, the SQU team made strong and pertinent arguments as to why the revolutions had indeed failed, they were convincingly beaten by the sheer force of the Sudanese team’s position supporting the motion. It looked as if the QU team had plenty of experience defending that same position in discussions.
QatarDebate Center was founded in 2007 in order to develop the level of open discussion and debate and promote it among students in Qatar and the Middle East, contributing to the preparation of global citizens and thought leaders of the future.
