Dear Debating Community,
We are excited to announce that we are now accepting submissions for review for the 2013 edition of the Monash Debate Review (MDR). The MDR is an annual international debating publication, and is a scholarly, interdisciplinary journal. Its contributors include those of an academic disposition, seasoned debaters, and articulate commentators with something to say about our activity. Examples of past issues can be seen here: http://www.monashdebaters.com/mdr-past-editions.php.
We are interested in articles from in a wide range of areas related to debating, including but not limited to:
* Academic discussion about appropriate adjudication, rules, organization, guidelines, eligibility and format of debating.
* Descriptive work about debating as a phenomenon.
* Articles consider the activity of debating via other academic disciplines.
* Examinations of particular topics or themes which may be debated provided this is to understand the ways in which the debating community does should or could tackle the issue.
We are also particular interested in including articles that explore the themes of gender, discrimination and debating. If you would like to contribute, or collaborate, on an article that touches on these themes, please get in touch.
Articles will vary in length, scope and approach. Broadly, we envisage two types of articles in this issue of the MDR:
- Short, opinion pieces, on an issue in debating. These could be submitted in conjunction with another person’s short opinion piece offering an alternate viewpoint on the issue at hand. We envisage these pieces being approximately 1000-2000 words, and they may very well not be heavily reliant on research or other academic sources.
- Longer, further developed pieces. These could be descriptive in nature or offering a position or viewpoint. We imagine these will be more reliant on some form of research or sources, and may well reference existing academic literature. These should be approximately between 2000 and 4000 words in length.
We are now accepting abstracts of proposed articles. The deadline for abstracts is 10th of September 2013. In order to submit an abstract for review, and to allow us to blind review your abstracts, authors should send two documents via email to the Editor (marynugent@gmail.com):
1. Your abstract, including a proposed title, and a short (max 500) description of what the article would consist of, including any sources or research you intend to refer to. You should also indicate in this document approximately how long you envisage it being (in particular, whether this is going to be a short opinion piece or a longer article).
2. Your name, article title, institutional affiliation(s), country, brief summary of debating and adjudicator achievements, contact details.
The editorial team will then work with the authors to ensure the completion of articles by a later deadline. As a peer reviewed journal, one or more referees will evaluate each submission.
Questions, queries, and discussion with the editorial team are welcomed, and should also be directed to the Editor.
Best,
MDR Vol 11. Editorial Team
