LAAKEA Workshop:
Debating in Language Centre Instruction
24-25 September 2010
Trainer: Professor Alfred Snider, University of Vermont
DESCRIPTION:
This workshop will deal with how to use debating as a classroom
tool in intermediate and advanced English language classes to
increase active learning and student achievement. The workshop is
based on the book _Many Sides: debate across the curriculum_ (2nd
edition) written by Alfred Snider & Maxwell Schnurer.
The workshop will introduce the concept and take teachers on a
step-by-step exploration of the central ideas in the process and
assist them in designing debating activities to use in their
individual classrooms. The presentations will be interactive and
teachers will be invited to ask questions and pose issues that they
feel are relevant to their teaching styles and classroom situations.
At the end of the workshop attending teachers should be able to
assign, prepare, stage and evaluate debates in their classes. The
instructor will continue to be available for consultation and advice
through email and Skype.
