Japanese National Debate Team to Tour USA
Subject:
Committee for International Discussion and Debate (CIDD) announces call for US hosts of the Japanese National Debating Team
Text of the call:
The Committee for International Discussion and Debate (CIDD) of the National Communication Association is proud to announce the 2014 Japanese National Debating Team tour of the United States. This year’s tour is particularly exciting, as it marks the 45th year of intercultural discussion and debate exchange with our colleagues in Japan. Please consider helping to celebrate this rich history by hosting two members of the Japanese National Debating Team in Spring 2014 at your college or university.
Approximate Touring Dates: late February to late March 2014
Fees: The fee for hosting the Japanese team is $800.00. Hosts also provide, at minimum, lodging, meals, and local transportation.
Deadline: Applications are due by Friday, January 17th. Hosts will be notified about the status of their bid by January 20th.
How to Bid: To place a bid to host the team, fill out all information on our online submission form (available athttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/10SfpWlzomrBrwfT7qAa5UJr9DD1bEFfcnQe1GB_1LzE/viewform)
Suggestions for Prospective Hosts
Hosts should plan to hold at least one public exhibition debate. Other ideas for hosts include:
*Hosting events for the debaters in conjunction with global campus or community initiatives such as “International Week,” alumni event, or symposium.
*Featuring the Japanese debaters in guest lectures, presentations, or question and answer periods with classes on intercultural communication, argumentation and debate, or Japanese language and culture.
*Seeking opportunities for visiting debaters to interact with students, alumni, local dignitaries, and high school students.
*Taking the debaters to major (or minor) attractions of cultural or historical significance.
Before the tour commences, we will provide an informational hosting packet. We will ask hosts to provide a projected itinerary (so we can help other hosts schedule time for breaks, laundry, and other essential needs) and copies of promotional materials. Hosts will also be expected to provide feedback about event attendance and academic/programmatic impact to CIDD at the conclusion of the visit.
Volume Discounts
If multiple schools in close geographic proximity (several schools within a metropolitan area or easy driving distance) organize collectively to host a leg of the tour and can provide transportation between locations, each school participating in that leg will receive a $200 discount off their hosting fee. So, for example, if Northwestern, Loyola-Chicago, and Roosevelt University in Chicago bid to host in succession, each would pay $600. Multiple stops in adjacent communities reduce travel costs and allow hosts to economize through collaboration. The CIDD cannot provide additional discounts beyond the discounts provided above. Non-hosting institutions and community groups interested in having the debaters visit should contact the tour coordinator for more information.
Note: For those who are unable to host the Japanese team this Spring, please be advised that the CIDD will be coordinating the British national debate tour of the US in Fall 2014.
Inquiries about the tour can be directed to: Sarah Green, Program Coordinator (nca.cidd@gmail.com) or Dr. Carly Woods, CIDD chairperson (cwoods3@unl.edu)
