Debating Lectures in Budapest after Budapest Open
A wonderful opportunity comes to Budapest this March. The Budapest Open Debating Tournament (www.debatehungary.com) is bringing debaters, adjudicators and teachers from more than 30 contries together, to compete, to have discussions, and to learn. With several of the world's most successful debaters and of the most recognised experts in the topic being here, there are going to be some unique occasions to further your skills and open your eyes to the world!
Debating is an activity that is at least as exciting and engaging as it is educational and transformational. Through the clashes of ideas in a passionate but orderly manner, one can develop critical thinking and reasoning skills, presentation skills and creativity, improvisation and cooperation. Debating helps to accept others' ideas and to see the world from multiple perspectives, while at the same time being able to stand up for our own cause with conviction. It furthers confidence and leadership skills, and it is an innovative tool in educators' hands for empowering and motivating students through building their self-esteem.
Few people know more about all this than Alfred Snider and Stephen Llano, world-leading experts of debating. Alfred Snider, the Edwin W. Lawrence Professor of Forensics at the University of Vermont, teaches courses in debate, argumentation, persuasion and rhetorical analysis. He has spent over forty years promoting debate and critical communication as an alternative to violence and conflict as well as a method for achieving real democracy and a true civil society. Stephen Llano, Director of Debate and debate coach at St John's University, NY, has been teaching about and through debating, in high schools and universities, for 15 years. His expertise in communication and rhetoric, as well as his practical experience teaching debate, is valued and sought after worldwide, from the United States to the United Kingdom and from Slovenia to Japan. Both Snider and Llano are going to be in Budapest for the tournament, and they are going to share their experience through two presentations:
