British National Debating Team tour of USA

The Committee for International Discussion and Debate (CIDD) of the National Communication Association is proud to announce the British National Debating Team tour. We are currently seeking US colleges and universities to host two members of the British National Debating Team in Fall 2013.

Approximate Touring Dates: late September to late November 2013

Fees: The fee for hosting the British team is $800.00. Hosts also provide, at minimum, lodging, meals, and local transportation.

Deadline: Applications are due by Monday, July 15th. Hosts will be notified about the status of their bid by mid-August.

How to Bid: To place a bid to host the team, please send ALL of the following information to nca.cidd@gmail.com by July 15th.

1. School or Organization Name
2. Contact Name and Address (summer contact information)
3. Telephone and Email (Summer and Fall)
4. Desired Dates: Please include several dates in order of preference. Provide as wide a range of options as possible. The tour itinerary is scheduled based on geographic proximity to other sites. Limited date options will limit your chances of hosting. Note: Because NCA is in Washington D.C. on November 21-24, Eastern hosts are strongly encouraged to craft bids around November dates.
5. Prohibited dates: Please list dates that you absolutely cannot host.
6. Local airport: If there is more than one option, please indicate this. Trains are also an option in some cases.
7. Other schools that might share the stop (include contact information).

Suggestions for Prospective Hosts

It is expected that all hosts will hold AT LEAST one public exhibition debate. Previous hosts have:

*Hosted the debate in conjunction with a major campus or community event, such as “International Week,” alumni event, or symposium.
*Featured the British debaters in guest lectures, presentations, or question and answer periods with classes on debate, rhetoric, or British culture.
*Taken their guests to major (or minor) attractions of cultural or historical significance.
*Sought opportunities for visiting debaters to interact with students, alumni, local dignitaries, and high school students.

Before the tour commences, we will provide an informational hosting packet. We will ask hosts to provide a projected itinerary (so we can help other hosts schedule time for breaks, laundry, and other essential needs) and copies of promotional materials and. Hosts will also be expected to provide feedback about event attendance and academic/programmatic impact to CIDD at the conclusion of the visit.

Volume Discounts

If multiple schools in close geographic proximity (several schools within a metropolitan area or easy driving distance) organize collectively to host a leg of the tour and can provide transportation between locations, each school participating in that leg will receive a $200 discount off their hosting fee. So, for example, if Northwestern, Loyola-Chicago, and Roosevelt University in Chicago bid to host in succession, each would pay $600. Multiple stops in adjacent communities reduce travel costs and allow hosts to economize through collaboration. The CIDD cannot provide additional discounts beyond the discounts provided above. Non-hosting institutions and community groups interested in having the debaters visit should contact the tour coordinator for more information.

Note: For those who are unable to host the British in fall, please be advised that the CIDD has tentative plans to host the Japanese National Team during the spring semester.

Inquiries about the tour can be directed to: Sarah Green, Tour Coordinator (nca.cidd@gmail.com) or Dr. Carly Woods, CIDD member (cwoods3@unl.edu)
