o Possible for CEDA to train external reviewers?
Culture of Debate
• What is the proper time, manner to be involved before it is too late
• Sometimes graduate students can be a conduit to discussions
• Might be a culture of letting things slide
• Most of our methods for dealing with issues are informal
o Need a better response system
• Sometimes a lack of formal rules leads to issues
• Culture of underage drinking or drinking in general
• What is the impact of Title IX on debate programs
• Some sort of training or discussion with new coaches/graduate students
• Conversations and discussion is necessary
• Possible to look into personal liability insurance
• Need more informal mentoring networks
o And formal structures for assisting young coaches
• Have to demonstrated compliance with external measures to be a CEDA school
• Best practices?
• Rewards instead of punishment?
o Diversity
o Academic
Program Diversity/Judge Preference
• Better hiring processes for hired gun and summer camp jobs
o Even a diverse staff does not mean the best hiring practice
• Bringing diverse sets of judges to a tournament
• Tournaments restrict judges who teams can hire
• Problem is how we “mark” individuals who are diverse
• How to include diversity issues without artificially inflating numbers
• Train judges as well so they are better prepared
• Expanding elim panels
• Editorial issue in CAD on judging?
• Panels on the nature of judging
• More written ballots
o Even just a few ballots per tournament
• Preffing is extremely complex – hard to find that solution
• More tab room transparency
