Carver & Mihut Win Global Debate and Public Policy Challenge Tournament in Budapest
Submitted by Mite Kuzevski on 26 June 2013
GDPPC Open, organized by the debate societies of CEU, Corvinus and ELTE, was held between 21 and 24 June at CEU. Designed as an extension to the Global Debate and Public Policy Challenge (GDPPC), the tournament engaged 32 teams from over 15 countries. Along with participants from India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and USA, regional debaters entered a five-round competition, with a tight schedule and some very soliciting motions.
The Finals motion was dedicated to next year's theme of the Challenge and proposed that offenders with drug dependance should be sent into treatment rather than to prison. Providing adjudication for this stage of the competition were the Chief Adjudicators: Nika Jelaska (Croatia), Viktor Prlja (Serbia), Radu Cotarcea (Romania), Filip Dobranic (Slovenia) and CEU Alumna Ana Gurau (Moldova). After a long, but productive deliberation, the judges decided that the award went to team Broadly Speaking of A.J. Carver and Georgiana Minut, former Budapest students and members of CEU Debate Society. After the summer holidays, the two are set to depart for China, where Georgiana will study, while A.J. will coach academic debate at Hunan Normal University.
GDPPC Open was possible thanks to the generous support from Open Society Foundations and Central European University. Organizers' special thanks go to Anita Karpati (OSI-Budapest), Zsolt Ilija (Student Life), Judit Jakab (Alumni Relations and Career Services), Gloria Oh (Communications Office), the Student Recruitment Office and International Debate Education Association for promotional and media support.
