Many people will be going to India in December for Chennai WUDC, and you may be one of them. Our idea is to have a university student debate workshop in Bangladesh before Chennai WUDC, with the workshop held 16-24 December 2013. The plan is to encourage people to come early for Chennai WUDC, and then we can provide travel subsidy to come to Dhaka, Bangladesh for the workshop.
Why Bangladesh? Bangladesh is a very active debating country, both at the university and the schools level, but the many debaters there do not receive the kind of excellent world-class instruction they deserve and could really benefit from. Bangladesh debaters are hard working, ambitious and have excellent language skills. What they do not have is money to travel for instruction or a local debate-training infrastructure. Bangladesh won the WUDC ESL title in Berlin. There is a lot more where that came from. Bangladesh is not a rich country, and it is not a tourist destination, but it is safe and it is a very active debating country that needs attention. We will be providing scholarships within the budget for exceptionally needy students. No one will make a profit. We also anticipate that with low costs students will also come from other parts of Asia and the world. Especially if you are there. ☺
With this program leading debate figures can come to Bangladesh to do training and it will not be so costly because these trainers are already flying to Chennai. But, our hosts (United International University, Cambrian College and other partners) have arranged for excellent classroom space, housing for faculty in a Five star hotel (http://www.lakeshorehotel.com.bd/ ) and professional catering of three meals a day plus tea.
The format will be that of a debate academy that you might be familiar with, like the International Debate Academy in Slovenia, the Cameroon Debate Academy, the Iraq Debate Academy, the World Schools Debate Academy in Slovenia or the North America Debate Academy in Vermont. http://debateacademy.net/Debate_Academy/Academy_Model.html There will be lectures, followed by small group exercises and two critiqued practice debates each day along with occasional elective classes of various types that students can choose from. You would be asked to give a lecture or two, do small group exercises, judge practice debates and also offer some elective classes. We will try to equalize the work burden and concentrate your free time together. There will be no evening training.
Be there!
