WINDHOEK – The Namibian Schools Debating Association was recently held at the Ongwediva College of Education.

The competition comprised of the seven best debaters from every region.

The event saw tough competition between the different debaters and teams.

The motions debated on included: this house will ban presidential elections; this house will increase Namibia’s sea territory; and this house will prohibit all private health care.

Team Khomas and Team Oshana went through to the finals in which they debated on the motion that Unam’s minimum entry requirements are too low. Team Oshana was victorious and was crowned the National Debating Champions.

Individual awards went to: Michael Nauta (Team Karas) for best male speaker at the competition; Chaze Simanga of Team Oshana and a Grade 12 learner for best female speaker. She has received a study grant from the main sponsor, Sanlam Namibia, to study whatever and wherever she chooses, provided that she obtains an average mark of 75% during her final year-end exams.

Michael Nauta and a few other chosen delegates form part of the Namibian schools debating team, which will be travelling to Scotland next year to attend the world schools debating championship, and also to Uganda this year to attend the Pan-Africa debates.
